Madrid's Barajas Airport Introduces New EES Border Checks

Madrid's major airport is the first in Spain to introduce new biometric border checks as part of the European Entry and Exit System (EES).

The new system, which will be phased in across the country in the coming months, was rolled out at Madrid-Barajas airport on Sunday for registering non-EU foreigners entering the Schengen area.

According to a report from Spanish press agency EFE, 1,819 passengers entered the country using the new system on its first day.

The Interior Ministry stated that an Australian citizen was the first person to enter Spain through the new system, which will be fully operational in six months.
