Extra sugar levy may be a bitter pill, warns Suntory. By Simon Hacker | 13th October 2025
A second tightening to sugary drinks legislation, expected in the Autumn Statement to bolster health messaging and measures on obesity, diabetes and tooth decay, is casting a shadow over ongoing investment by Suntory at its Forest of Dean factory.
The Japanese firm's Coleford plant currently employs some 700 people and is a core economic driver for the region, with the firm's latest financials, posted in August, showing that business was buoyant in 2024.
Suntory Beverage and Food bought Lucozade and Ribena in September 2013 from GlaxoSmithKline for £1.35bn and since then has gone on to invest in the brands' home in Coleford, with current input seeing a £6m upgrade to the factory in Rock Lane, to focus on electrifying the site and increasing sustainability.
The site has been producing Ribena since 1947.
