Celebrating Indigenous People's Day in OC

Cities, local colleges, and community groups are hosting events across October to celebrate indigenous culture and history, forgoing Christopher Columbus Day.

Orange County community groups, colleges, and cultural institutions will honor Native American history, culture, and resilience. The area was once inhabited by the Tongva and Acjachemen peoples.

The holiday, on the second Monday of October, has been recognized by Gov. Gavin Newsom through proclamations. In 2021, President Joe Biden issued the first federal proclamation commemorating Indigenous Peoples Day.

Many cities have opted to replace Columbus Day celebrations with a more complete story of the arrival of Europeans in the Americas.
