A team of archaeologists has made a significant discovery in southern Turkey, unearthing five small round loaves, likely intended for the Eucharist, dating back over 1300 years.
One of the loaves features an image of Jesus Christ and was found in Topraktepe, an ancient Roman and Byzantine center known as Irenopolis, "City of Peace", in the present-day Karaman province, Anatolia region.
The loaves, made from barley, have been remarkably well-preserved due to carbonisation and the oxygen-free environment in which they were discovered, with origins tracing back to the sixth to eighth centuries.
