Author's summary: Review of Stage 3, Day 3 performances.
The third day of Stage 3 at the Chopin Competition 2025 took place on Thursday, October 16, 2025. Jed Distler shared his thoughts on the performances.
Distler mentioned that the morning performances did not impress him much. He had previously heard Tomoharu Ushida at the 2021 Chopin Competition and liked him, but this time had mixed impressions. Ushida's performances of the F minor Fantasy and B minor Sonata were loud and undifferentiated, which Distler found relieving when they ended.
Distler also shared his thoughts on Zitong Wang's performance, which he found to be hollow and aggressive in loud passages, and lacking body and definition in soft passagework. He noted that experiencing her in a relatively extended recital provided more perspective than her first two stages.
All I can say is that I was relieved when his loud and undifferentiated F minor Fantasy and B minor Sonata performances ended.
