Colorado domestic violence deaths rise even as statewide homicides fall

Colorado Sees Rise in Domestic Violence Deaths

Despite a decrease in statewide homicides, Colorado experienced a rise in domestic violence deaths in 2024, with 72 fatalities reported, marking a 37% increase from the previous year.

The year 2024 also saw the highest number of children killed in domestic violence incidents in a single year. For those in need of help, resources are available, including the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988, the Colorado Crisis Services hotline at 1-844-493-8255, or texting "TALK" to 38255 to reach a trained counselor.

"This sharp increase against the backdrop of an overall decline in homicides underscores the unique and growing lethality of domestic violence,"

according to the annual report released by Attorney General Phil Weiser's office. This trend suggests that while public safety interventions may be reducing general violence, they are not having the same impact on domestic violence fatalities.

Resources for support are available online, at walk-in locations, or through chat services.
