Malaysian Government to Implement Lemon Law

The government of Malaysia is set to amend the Consumer Protection Act 1999 to incorporate elements of a lemon law, as announced by Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the tabling of Budget 2026.

This move follows a six-month feasibility study carried out last year, which concluded that a specific legal framework is needed to address issues and limitations related to consumer protection in the automotive industry.

The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) welcomes this move, but notes that a clear definition and criteria are needed for the implementation of the lemon law.

As announced during the tabling of Budget 2026 by prime minister and finance minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the government is set to amend the Consumer Protection Act 1999 to incorporate elements of a lemon law in Malaysia to protect the rights of consumers with regard to automotive purchases.
