At Request of Pope Leo, Cardinal Presides Over Act of Reparation to Restore Sanctity in St. Peter’s Basilica Following Altar Desecration

Act of Reparation in St. Peter's Basilica

Cardinal Mauro Gambetti presided over a penitential rite of reparation at the main altar of St. Peter's Basilica on October 13.

This followed a serious act of desecration that had taken place earlier. The rite included a penitential procession, sprinkling of holy water, and incensing of the altar to purify it.

Emphasized asking God for "forgiveness" for the desecration

According to Father Enzo Fortunato, the rite was attended by members of the chapter of the Vatican basilica. The act of reparation was done at the request of Pope Leo.
