President Dallin H. Oaks: A Life of Faith and Ministry

President Dallin H. Oaks has served in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for over 40 years. At the time of his call to serve, he was working at a Chicago law firm and raising a young family.

According to his biography, "In the Hands of the Lord," by Richard E. Turley, Oaks was asked by his stake president to serve a stake mission and as a counselor in the stake mission presidency, requiring 40 hours of monthly proselyting.

I could not see how I could accept this calling and still keep up with my law practice. Yet I could not say no to a calling that I knew to be from the Lord.

Despite initial reservations, Oaks accepted the call and soon recognized the blessings that come from serving the Lord. As he said, he came to recognize

the unusual — even miraculous — blessings that come to those who serve the Lord.
