No. 3 Virginia field hockey needed a win to return to form after a loss to No. 2 North Carolina last week. A home game against No. 7 Liberty provided the perfect opportunity.
The game was a defensive slugfest, with Liberty ranking second in shutouts per game and Virginia ranking third in save percentage. In the end, Virginia took home the 1-0 win, stifling Liberty’s attempt at an equalizer in the second half.
The Cavaliers started strong, notching two shots to the Flames’ zero in the initial minutes. The lone goal came eight minutes in off a deflected shot from graduate midfielder Suze Leemans.
