Crosslake Explores Water Meters for Short-Term Rentals

Changes to improvements on Harbor Lane require fewer trees to be removed.

CROSSLAKE — Short-term rental properties in Crosslake connected to city sewer may be required to install commercial water meters in 2026.

On the bigger VRBOs, they’re going to have a higher water usage. So then their bill is going to go up accordingly for that,

said Public Works Director Patrick Wehner. City Clerk Char Nelson noted that while the cost of the meters could be included in existing rental fees, property owners would have to pay for installation.

Crosslake Mayor Jackson Purfeerst stated he didn’t want to take action until the council sees estimates for property owners’ installation costs. The council tabled the issue and will address it at its November meeting to discuss 2026 short-term rental ordinance amendments.

Author summary: Crosslake considers water meters for rentals.
