The Changing Landscape of the Gay Village

The queer communities are shifting away from the Gay Village, which has been the epicenter of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community since the 1970s.

In recent decades, the Village has undergone gentrification, commercialization, tourism, and "degayification".

"The Village remains a historic, symbolic, and still very active heart of Montréal’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Over the decades, it has constantly evolved, much like the communities it represents."

According to Gabrielle Rondy, executive director of La Société du développement commercial du Village (SDC), the emergence of queer spaces in other areas is a diversification of queer geographies across the city, reflecting Montréal's openness and inclusion.

The Village shortened its name to The Village on October 20, 2020.

Author's summary: Queer culture shifts in Montreal.
