Rare North American vagrants thrill Icelandic birders

Rare North American Vagrants in Iceland

Iceland has seen a trio of North American vagrants in late October 2025, including a juvenile Brown-headed Cowbird, a male Varied Thrush, and a Sora.

A visiting American birder discovered the juvenile Brown-headed Cowbird in Reykjavík on 24 October, with the bird likely present since 11 October.

The cowbird is an Icelandic first and the first autumn record in the Western Palearctic, with only 10 records for the region.

The Varied Thrush is only Iceland's second ever recorded sighting.

The late-autumn flurry of North American birds in the country began on Friday 24 October.
