Gold miners Fresnillo and Endeavour Mining saw significant gains, leaping 9.1% and 11% respectively.
The FTSE 250 ended 262.48 points higher at 22,064.32, a 1.2% increase, while the AIM All-Share rose 6.14 points to 792.47, a 0.8% increase.
