Florida's Catholic bishops have written to Governor Ron DeSantis, urging him to stay the execution of 72-year-old inmate Samuel "Sammy" Smithers, scheduled for October 14.
“There is a way to punish without ending another human life: life-long incarceration without the possibility of parole,”
The Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops emphasized that every human life is sacred and the death penalty is unnecessary. Smithers was convicted and sentenced to death in 1996 for the murders of Christy Cowan, 31, and Denise Roach, 24.
