The Limits of the 1st Amendment in Academic Freedom
American colleges and universities are increasingly firing or punishing professors for their statements on social media or in the classroom.
Following the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, several universities, including Iowa State University, Clemson University, and Ball State University, took disciplinary action against employees for making negative online comments about Kirk.
- Some professors compared Kirk to a Nazi.
- Others described his views as hateful.
- Some stated there was no reason to be sorry about his death.
Professors are now suing their employers, claiming disciplinary actions violate their First Amendment rights.
