The share of care workers in England with a basic qualification has hit a new low, following government cuts to planned training funding.
The proportion of care and support workers with a level 2 qualification, equivalent to a good GCSE, fell to 38% in 2024-25, down from 41% in 2023-24, according to Skills for Care’s latest report.
This decline coincides with a £115m cut to planned spending on sector training in 2024-25, which was made by the Labour government last July.
The fall in qualified care workers is a concerning trend, especially given the importance of trained staff in providing quality care.
