Gopal Sandanam, an 80-year-old Malaiyaha Tamil, was born in Hammeliyawatte, Galle district, in 1945. He worked on the estate from the age of 14 until he was 77.

His parents are buried in the estate's cemetery, which he can no longer access after it was sold. His wife, Thekkamalai Thangai, lived in Hammeliyawatte since 1949 and worked on the estate.

She recalls the riots in the 1980s, where Tamils on estates were attacked and their belongings destroyed, leading to displacement.
