An injured cougar that had been spotted in residential and commercial areas in Port Alberni for several weeks was euthanized.
A BC Conservation Service officer cornered the cougar in a yard and "humanely dispatched" it, according to a spokesperson.
Physical assessment of the animal found that it had what appeared to be a gunshot wound to a leg and into the chest.
The cougar had a badly broken leg and appeared emaciated in photos taken by neighbours. It was put down at the site.
The animal had been spotted underneath the Port Alberni Port Authority office building, causing concern among employees.
